Sexual Health Positive Terms
1-2. Be Fruitful and Increase, pah-RAH rah-BAH (Gen 1:22) Strong, h6509 and h7235
The big picture of sexual health takes shape in Genesis 1-2. Unhealthy sexuality does not exist within these two chapters. All vocabulary and images paint a positive view of human sexuality. The education of little children begins with the sexual health-positive words, “be fruitful and increase” appearing seven times in the book of Genesis (Genesis 1:22, 28; 8:17; 9:1,7; 17:20; 35:11). Seven often occurs as a perfect or complete number in ancient literature, meant to reflect spiritual wholeness. The phrase “be fruitful and increase” first connects to sexually reproducing animals, then Adam and Eve’s family, Noah, and finally the family of Abraham to Joseph. No negative images connect to the “be fruitful and increase” sexual health statements throughout the Bible. This sexual health-positive phrase begins every intimate relationship, called covenant, God made with humankind. All covenants in the Book of Genesis begin with this benevolent mandate, “be fruitful and increase.”
Within Genesis 1-5 the “be fruitful and increase” phrase appears twice. Genesis 1:22 reveals the first declaration of God in the Bible blessing reproduction of the animal kingdom. The second blessing of God directs at humankind: “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it” (Genesis 1:28). The first blessing of God to humankind mandates sexual health. No unhealthy sexuality images appear in Genesis 1-2.
The Hebrew word, be fruitful, PRH, פָּרָה, pronounced pa-RAH, occurs 29 times in 28 verses in the Hebrew Old Testament (Strong, H6509). PRH means bearing fruit or offspring. RBH, ,רבה pronounced ra-BAH, meaning “increase,” appears 235 times in 215 verses in the Hebrew Old Testament (Strong, H7235). In the Old Testament, the sexual health-positive terms “be fruitful and increase” always mean producing offspring through sexual reproduction. No negative images connect to this phrase at any place in the Bible. Examples include: “God blessed them and said, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth,’” (Genesis 1:22) and “God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground’” (Genesis 1:28).
Jeremiah and Ezekiel’s preaching spanned the catastrophic annihilation of Judah with exile to Babylon in the 6th to 7th centuries BCE. When these prophets preached of hope, their sermons touched the big picture of sexual health with the words “be fruitful and increase.”
New Testament
Thesexual health phrase appears once in the New Testament at Colossians 1:5-6. Paul the Apostle reflects with non-Jewish Christians, connecting the covenants of Genesis with the inclusion of non-Jewish peoples to Christianity.
Of this you have heard before in the word of the truth, the gospel, which has come to you, as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and increasing—as it also does among you, since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God in truth. (Colossians 1:5-6)

3H. Sexual Connection, dah-BACH (Gen 2:24) Strong, h1692
Three uses of dah-BACH in the WLC connect to sexual contact. Genesis 2:24 is cited by Jesus as a healthy sexuality term for intercourse in covenant marriage. Genesis 34:3 is an unhealthy sexuality snap shot used in the rape of Dinah. 1 Kings 11:2 reports that Solomon had an unhealthy sexual connection to idolatrous political wives.
Gen 2:24
That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united (dah-BACH) to his wife, and they become one flesh.
Gen 34:3

3G. Sexual Connection, kah-LA-oh (Mat 19:5) Strong, g2853
The term kah-LA-oh has a range of meaning: sexual intercourse, connection, contact, or parental affection. All three GNT uses of kah-LA-oh relate to sexual contact. Jesus uses kah-LA-oh in Matthew 19:5 for healthy genital sexual intercourse in marriage. Luk 15:15 cites this word in the context of the prodigal son’s unhealthy connection with a male Greek citizen. The prodigal’s brother will reflect later that the unhealthy behavior involved sex trafficking. “But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes (female and or male sex traffickers, PAR-nay and or PAR-nos, Strong, g4204, g4205) comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!” (Luke 15:30) Paul uses this term for genital intercourse with a sex trafficked female. (1Co 6:16) All citations relate to sexual contact. Dah-Bach and kah-LA-oh are used 6 times in Scripture. Two of the citations are used for sexual intimacy in covenantal marraige and 4 are used for unhealthy sexuality like rape, and sacred sex trafficking.

4H. Sexual Intimacy, yah-DAH (Gen 4:1) Strong, h3045
Genital Sexual Intercourse, yah-DAH: (Genesis 4:1)
The premier sexual health word for genital sexual intercourse is a term built on intimacy formed within the PFC. Yah-DAH, יָדַע, “to know” or “be intimate with” can have a wide range of meaning literally, euphemistically, and inferentially. Yah-DAH occurs 947 times in the Hebrew Old Testament (Strong, H3045). Yah-DAH can mean to know by observation, by compassion, and causatively as in instructing, designating or punishing. Yah-DAH nuances include acknowledging, acquainting, advising, answering, and appointing. A range of intimacy meanings exist: aware, unaware, comprehension, considering, shrewdness, declaring, diligence, discerning, discovering, familiar friend or relation, feeling, and learning. Yah-DAH appears as the first and foremost intimacy term for genital intercourse within the sexual health-positive big picture of Genesis 1-5. Yah-DAH as genital sexual intercourse is only healthy and positive in the first four chapters of Genesis (Strong, H3045).
Yah-DAH appears three times in Genesis 1-5 for the intimacy of genital sexual intercourse. Three often occurs as Biblical literary device meaning completeness or wholeness.
Adam made love to his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, “With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man.” (Genesis 4:1)
Cain made love to his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was then building a city, and he named it after his son Enoch. (Genesis 4:17)
Adam made love to his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, saying, “God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.” (Genesis 4:25)
Seven times the sexual health use of yah-DAH appears in the Book of Genesis. Seven often symbolizes completion (Genesis 4:1,17, 25; 19:5, 8, 24:16, 38:26). The range of usage includes: sexual intimacy between Adam with Eve, 4:1, 25, and Cain having intercourse with his wife in 4:17. Yah-DAH then sharply contrasts the sexual health meaning of chapters 1-4 with coercive sexual abuse in Genesis 19. In the Sodom unhealthy sexuality snapshot of Genesis 19:3, the word yah-DAH appears within the threat of violent gang rape. The narrator of the Judah and Tamar seduction narrative of Genesis 38:16 explains that Judah ceased yah-DAH, sexual intercourse with his daughter in law, Tamar. She posed as a sacred sex trade worker to coerce a conception by seducing her father-in-law. Perhaps the author contrasts the sexual health meaning of yah-DAH with the violent snapshots of Sodom and coercion of Tamar with Judah? This may be the literary device called paradox. The word yah-DAH, for genital sexual intercourse appears seven times in the book of Genesis.
- Sexual health: five times; Genesis 4:1,17, 25; 19:8, 24:16
- Sexual abuse: two times; Genesis 19:5 and 38:26
The Book of Judges records a decline in sexual health for the people of Israel. Three of the citations refer to virginity as in a woman who had not “known” a man, meaning genital sexual intercourse. The Judges 19:22 passage mirrors the Genesis 19 account of the violent threat of gang rape. As Lot offered his daughters to a heterosexual mob in Genesis 19, the Judges 19 snapshot states, So the man took his concubine and sent her outside to them, and they raped her and abused her throughout the night, and at dawn they let her go (Judges 19:25). The term for rape is yah-DAH, mirroring the paradoxical use of the word in Genesis 19. This may be a teaching method to illustrate the irony of healthy sexuality compared to the trauma of erotic violence.
The books of Samuel and Kings use the sexual health term yah-DAH twice. Samuel uses yah-DAH for the intercourse with pregnancy of Hannah who gave birth to Samuel. The Kings citation reflects on King David’s failing health in latter years. The passage asserts King David did not have genital sexual intercourse (yah-DAH) with a young woman who attended to David’s physical need for warmth.
Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, with the Minor Prophets do not use the term yah-DAH for genital sexual intercourse. The Book of Hosea references unhealthy sexuality terms to describe the infidelity of the people of Israel toward God. Hosea marries a woman with a history of the sacred sex trafficking. She abandons her husband Hosea for sex trade customers. In a beautiful scene reflecting the intimacy of reconciliation, Hosea purchases his wife back from her handler, and reconciles with her. The term yah-DAH appears in parallel contrasting betrothal, sex trafficking, and a heart inclined toward the sacred sex trade. Jonah through Malachi have no references to yah-DAH as sexual intercourse.
The Writings do not use yah-DAH for genital sexual intercourse. It appears yah-DAH as sexual intimacy disappears from usage in the Bible beginning approximately 1000 BCE. This may be due to Greek influence. Scholars posit Goliath in the David snapshot may have been Greek (1 Samuel 17:23). DNA evidence from Palestinian archeological sites of the 10th century BCE may connect Goliath to Greek ancestry as well (Borschel-Dan, 2019). With the intrusion of Greek philosophy not only does yah-DAH as sexual intimacy disappear from usage, but the term for evil, RA, evolves as an ethical term rather than a loss of intimacy word approximately 1000 BCE.
The New Testament
The New Testament Greek term, ginosko, pronounced gi-NOE-skow, parallels the use of the Hebrew word, yah-DAH. Strong’s Concordance defines gi-NOE-skow in similar ways as yah-DAH. Specifically, Strong states that ginosko is a Jewish idiom for sexual intercourse (Strong, G1097). Gi-NOE-skow appears 222 times in 205 verses in the Greek New Testament. The term occurs twice, signifying genital sexual intercourse. The Matthew citation reflects the Genesis usage for genital sexual intercourse and the Luke passage identifies Mary as a virgin with the Hebrew phrase, “I have not known a man” (Matthew 1:25; Luke 1:34).
Gen 4:1
Adam made love to (yah-DAH) his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, “With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man.”
Gen 4:17
Cain made love to (yah-DAH) his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was then building a city, and he named it after his son Enoch.

5G. Covenant, dia-THEY-kay (Mat 26:28) Strong, g1242
A Biblical covenant is a sacred intimate relationship established by God with humankind, involving promises, obligations, and blessings. Covenant forms a central theme from Genesis to Revelation. Key examples include Noah and no more global disasters for sin, Abraham and territory with identity, The Law of Moses qualifying the people of Israel, the dynastic rule of David, and the New Covenant of transformation through the atonement of Jesus Christ. These divine commitments, founded upon the Hebrew word, buh-REETH, frame God’s plan of sexual health, safety, and redemption, uniting people to Him through faith and intimate relationship through Jesus Christ.
Key Biblical Covenants
- Noahic Covenant (Genesis 9): God promises all living creatures that He will never again destroy the earth by flood, symbolized by the rainbow.
- Abrahamic Covenant (Genesis 12, 15): God promises Abraham land, numerous descendants, and that all peoples would be blessed through him.
- Mosaic (Sinaitic) Covenant (Exodus 19-24): God gives the Law (including the Ten Commandments) to Israel, promising blessings for obedience and curses for disobedience, making them His holy nation.
- Davidic Covenant (2 Samuel 7): God promises David an eternal dynasty and a perpetual throne, fulfilled in Jesus, the ultimate Son of David.
- New Covenant (Jeremiah 31, Luke 22): Established through Jesus Christ, offering forgiveness of sins, a renewed relationship, and an internal law written on the heart by the Spirit, including both Jews and Gentiles.
Types of Covenants
- Unconditional: God promises to act without requiring specific human action (e.g., Noahic, Davidic, New Covenant).
- Conditional: Requires human faithfulness and obedience to receive blessings (e.g., Mosaic Covenant).
Covenants reveal God’s image, unwavering commitment to the people He loves, and the continuity of His redemptive plan across history, climaxing with intimate relationship with God found in Jesus Christ through His Spirit.
Mat 26:28
This is my blood of the covenant (dia-THEY-kay), which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

6-7. Recover Unhealthy Sexuality, kah-SAH ehr-VAH (Gen 9:23) h3680 and h6172
Perhaps one of the most beautiful images in Scripture reflecting the image of God in redemption is the phrase, kah-SAH ehr-VAH, recovering unhealthy sexuality. Genesis 9:23 is a snapshot intended to protect children from sexual contact within families. After surviving global sexual nihilism, Noah and his family plant a vineyard. Perhaps as a teaching piece on intoxication and regulating sexual neuro pathways, the text states that Noah got drunk. The daughters of Lot would also intoxicate their father to commit incest with their unconscious parent. (Genesis 19:30-38) While passed out from a drunken bender, Ham, his son, sees the nakedness of his father. This phrase mirrors similar wording from Leviticus 18, prohibiting sexual contact within families. Leviticus 18 uses the phrase “uncovering the nakedness of” as a euphemism for incestuous contact. In Genesis 9:23 the phrase “covering the nakedness” is used perhaps to show that Noah’s sons attempted to protect their mother and recover her from this sexual trauma while she and her husband lay intoxicated.
The phrase covering the nakedness of is also used in Ezekiel and Hosea. Ezekiel speaks to the people of Israel about their relapse to unhealthy sexuality, specifically referencing Canaan, the incestuous offspring of Ham and his mother. Ezekiel paints vivid images of Israel’s neglect and abuse. Then, after Israel’s willful participation in sex trafficking, a benevolent Father-God spreads the corner of his garment over her and covers the abuse. This may mirror the covering of Adam and Eve’s shame of Genesis 3:21.
Hosea too cites this phrase, recovering unhealthy sexuality or covering the nakedness of. Israel normalized sex trafficking numerous times throughout her history. Hosea’s menu impresses: the dehumanizing gaze of a sex trafficker, adultery between breasts, compulsion for sex trade clientele obsessing for their payment of services, immersion in the religious sexeconomy of Baal’s sacred sex trafficking, and loss of intimacy with God. The results of her addiction, the inability to recover from unhealthy sexuality:
Hos 2:9
“Therefore, I will take away my grain when it ripens, and my new wine when it is ready. I will take back my wool and my linen, intended to cover (kah-SAH) her naked body (ehr-VAH).
The covering of the naked body,(kah-SAH and ehr-VAH) carries the meaning of safety, protection, and recovery from abuse.
One of the first images of sexual abuse in Scripture is a euphemism highlighting the care and compassion of God for survivors of incest. Perhaps exchanging a traumatic erotic image with a gentler phrase like “recovering” prevents shutdown in parents and children?
Gen 9:23
But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it across their shoulders; then they walked in backward and covered (kah-SAH) their father’s naked body (ehr-VAH). Their faces were turned the other way so that they would not see their father naked.
Eze 16:8
Later I passed by, and when I looked at you and saw that you were old enough for love, I spread the corner of my garment over you and covered (kah-SAH) your naked body (ehr-VAH). I gave you my solemn oath and entered into a covenant with you, declares the Sovereign LORD, and you became mine.

Unhealthy Sexuality Terms
64H. Sexual Safety Decline, chah-LAWL (Gen 6:1) Strong, h2490
The decline from sexual health and safety begins with the Hebrew word, chah-LAWL (Strong, h2490). This term, chah-LAWL, is an untranslatable “trigger word” indicating a decline in sexual health and safety throughout the Bible. Chah-LAWL means to profane, defile, pollute, desecrate, to begin, to defile oneself sexually, to wound, to pierce. The majority of uses for the Hebrew word, chah-LAW, connect to the decline of intimacy with God. It can mean “to begin”, but the majority use of the word appears as a term triggering sexual health and safety decline. Chah-LAWL as a word signaling decline from health to abuse adds clarity to the ark with flood snap shot of Genesis 6-9.
